Write a Drabble
In comments to this post, write your own 100 word story, exclusive of the title. Make your title the title of the comment. Consider the prompt a jumping off point. Your story does not have to include this situation and does not have to be set at this point in her life. Consider carefully how you portray her race, class, culture and situation. Make her real.
The prompt: A beautiful, 14 year old African-American girl, easily the most intelligent amongst her classmates, living in a small cotton town in southern Arkansas, turns in an essay to her English teacher about her dreams for her future. The essay is painfully short. She writes, “I don’t want a job and I don’t want to get married. I want to have a lot of babies, and live off welfare, and watch daytime TV the rest of my life.”
100 words. What is her new beginning?
